Sadly, most Aboriginal burials in cemeteries from Sadly, most Aboriginal burials in cemeteries from the late 19th century are unmarked. A notable exception is the monument to George Smith Jnr, son of George “Dusty Bob” Smith, an ex-convict and pastoralist, and Mattie, an Aboriginal from Wiradjuri country near Dubbo. George is buried in the Dubbo Pioneer Cemetery.

The AAPA fought for citizenship and equality for Aboriginal people, and the end of the Aborigines Protection Act, 1909, which enabled the removal of Aboriginal children. John’s updated biography of his grandfather, “Fight for Liberty and Freedom”, is available now via @aboriginalstudiespress
