We are a Sydney-based consultancy specialising in Aboriginal history research and interpretation.

We opened in 2018, bringing together experienced historians and heritage consultants with the aim of doing history and heritage projects differently. In 2023 we shifted away from heritage consulting to focus on historical research and history and heritage interpretation. Our extensive skills and experience help place managers and the public gain better understandings of the histories of particular places. We work collaboratively with Aboriginal and other communities to share these stories in appropriate and engaging ways.

Michael has worked for the past 20 years in Aboriginal history, preparing expert reports for NSW native title claims, recording community genealogies and writing regional histories for local councils and government authorities.  More recently, he has recorded oral histories for the State Library of NSW and National Library of Australia.  He is the author of Pathfinders, A History of Aboriginal Trackers in NSW, published in 2020.  A website of the same name went live in 2016, the result of a collaborative project with NSW Police and the descendants of trackers.  Michael has also worked in communications for the NSW Aboriginal Land Council.

Collaborations

Working with Aboriginal communities is one of the great aspects of working in this sphere. Wherever we can, we seek to collaborate with Aboriginal people to research and share stories of Country and connection, and to leave a legacy of building research capacity.

Wherever we can, we seek to collaborate with Aboriginal people to research and share stories of Country and connection, and to leave a legacy of building research capacity. We have a long-standing collaboration with Aboriginal community researchers from the La Perouse based Gujaga Foundation [Gujaga] to develop content for family and community history projects [photo 1]. This has involved research training [photo 2], developing online and exhibition content [photo 3 and link 1 and link 2], and writing research papers. We also work with the Bila Group [Bila] to provide technical assistance and research training. In our heritage work we seek to build technical skills in the field and the laboratory [photo 4 and 5]
